INTRODUCTION

If you want to brush up on your Maths and English then choosing a Skills for Life course at TyneMet couldn’t be easier. You’ll also achieve a nationally recognised qualification, develop the skills you use in everyday life and boost your CV.

Achieving a qualification in Maths or English will help you to get a job, get promoted and give your children guidance with their homework. The qualifications are accredited by City & Guilds and NCFE and the process is free, flexible and designed for adults.

These courses will suit you if:

  • You want to refresh your Maths or English skills
  • You need Level 2 (GCSE A*-C grade or equivalent) Maths or English to access a job or a course
  • You didn’t get a grade C or above in your GCSEs

You can gain the qualifications at the following levels:
Entry Level 3 - A stepping-stone to the higher levels of study
Level 1 - Equivalent to a GCSE D - G grade
Level 2 - Equivalent to a GCSE A* - C grade

Courses include:

  • Functional English Entry 3
  • Functional English Level 1
  • Functional English Level 2
  • Functional Maths Entry 3
  • Functional Maths Level 1
  • Functional Maths Level 2

The first step is an initial assessment usually using a computer and takes around an hour. Your teacher will then work with you to prepare an Individual Learning Plan and choose the level of learning that suits you, from complete beginner right up to Level 2. Your plan will also contain targets so that you can decide the speed at which you want to learn and the topics you need to cover. You can then take as many practice tests as you like and when you feel ready you take the test for real.

You can take the test at Tyne Metropolitan College, Coast Road Campus.

WHY STUDY Maths or English at TyneMet at TyneMet?

TyneMet College runs a number of Maths and English courses which take place across the year at various times to suit your work and lifestyle commitments.

After as few as five sessions with us (or as many as you need) you could leave knowing you’ve passed a qualification that is recognised by colleges, employers and universities.

Some of our Higher Education and Higher Level Skills courses have entry requirements that include Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths, such as GCSE grade C or above. If you don’t already have those qualifications, TyneMet can help you gain them.

What our students think

All of my teachers at TyneMet have been so helpful and so have the Gateway staff. They gave me the confidence to carry on with my studies, without them I would not have been able to achieve all that I have in such a short space of time. I am looking forward to my HEFD course.
Tahira enrolled at TyneMet in 2009 with very little English. To date, Tahira has passed Levels 1 and 2 in ESOL, Level 1 in Maths and Levels 1 and 2 in English at TyneMet College. She continues to demonstrate her enthusiasm for learning and in order to gain qualifications to apply to study at university; has now enrolled on to a Higher Education Foundation Diploma (HEFD) course at TyneMet.
