Award-winning lecturer prepares students for competition

Nail Services teacher, Vikki Taylor-Dodds has entered a team of NVQ Level 3 students as they take on rivals from Gateshead and Ashington colleges in the North East Nail Competition this weekend.
Recently, Vikki won first prize in the Nail Art category at the national Nail Art Championships in London and is passing on her skills to the TyneMet team.
Although she has organised the event herself, Vikki is keen to point out that three, highly experienced independent judges will decide the winners!
Nail Art involves much more than just a manicure and a polish…it’s more a work of art on the tips of your fingers. It can take days, even weeks to work on a design and then create a nail although sometimes Vikki and her fellow competitors are given just two and a half hours to come up with something to impress the judges.
Nail Art is very popular in Russia and China and Vikki says it is really catching on in the UK, especially Scotland and Northern England which will provide career opportunities for her students. Vikki says: “It’s a real skill and students need to be able to show what they can do and taking part in competitions like the event this weekend will be a real asset for them in the future and give them the confidence to compete on the national stage.”
The TyneMet students take on their rivals this Sunday at the Caledonian Hotel in Jesmond, Newcastle.
