Mini Olympics at TyneMet

75 children from Battle Hill primary school were invited to take part in the fun and games which included traditional ‘sports-day’ activities such as the classic wheelbarrow race.

Whilst the emphasis was on having a good time, there was a serious side to the day, too, as programme leader, Mal Bowering explained:

“The students are being assessed on their organisational abilities in relation to planning and running the activities for the schoolchildren. Some were a bit anxious, a bit worried, I told them to relax and make it fun.”

After a busy time, the children were all presented with a certificate from NESA basketball coach, Marc Steutel.

Louise Wells, deputy head of Battle Hill primary said: “As well as a bit of fun and physical activity it is also important to have links with TyneMet. It might lead these youngsters to think about further education, meet staff here and see what’s going on. We’d also welcome students to come across to us to help them with their studies.”
