Learner Services
Becoming a student and dealing with the challenges of student life isn’t always easy. Learner Services helps students to face these challenges, providing them with practical support and expert advice.
Financial guidance
Learner Services can give financial guidance to all sorts of students. There are support funds and grants for students in particular situations and some may receive the Educational Maintenance Allowance. This Government scheme awards up to £30 a week to eligible students aged 16 – 18. Or, students may be able to access grants to pay for equipment on particular courses—for example uniforms, sports outfits or beauty tools.
Some of the support Learner Services provides is about gaining access to the right information. Students can get specialist futures advice at any stage of their time at TyneMet. Whether a student wants to find out about the next steps in their educational journey or learn more about improving their employability, Learner Services can help.
Student counsellor
TyneMet believes in supporting students in every area of their lives. That’s why there’s always a student counsellor on hand to give emotional guidance. This is a free service and students can simply drop in or make regular appointments.
The counsellor has outreach links with housing, mental health and drug organisations, plus other outside agencies that can provide specialised support to meet individual students’ needs. The college helps students succeed in their studies by easing difficulties in other parts of their lives.
Health advice
TyneMet is currently working with the local Primary Care Trust to develop a full contraception service in the college. From September 2009 there will be a fully qualified nurse available to advise students on everything from contraception to the HPV vaccination to drug abuse.
These are just some of the ways that Learner Services improve student life and the department covers many other areas. The college aims to raise overall academic attainment by approaching each student’s college experience holistically; happy, supported students are students who succeed.
Aimhigher
Tynemet College is an active member of the Aimhigher Tyne, Wear & Northumberland partnership, offering Aimhigher learners from schools, colleges and academies across the partnership a chance to discover more about the opportunities within higher education. Tynemet welcomes applications from students who have participated in Aimhigher activities.
Aimhigher is a national programme which aims to widen participation in higher education (HE) by raising awareness, aspirations and attainment among young people from under-represented groups. Primarily, Aimhigher focuses on groups who are currently under-represented in higher education.
